About This Destination

Tsukuba-san Shrine sits at the base of Mount Tsukuba, one of Japan's most famous mountains, where twin peaks represent male and female deities in an ancient fertility worship. A cable car and ropeway carry visitors to the summit for panoramic views across the Kanto Plain, particularly spectacular at night and during autumn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Tsukuba-san Shrine from Tokyo?

Take the Tsukuba Express from Akihabara to Tsukuba Station in about 45 minutes for around 1,210 yen. From there a shuttle bus to the shrine takes about 40 minutes and costs around 740 yen.

What is Tsukuba-san Shrine known for?

The shrine sits at the foot of double-peaked Mt. Tsukuba, sometimes paired with Mt. Fuji in the saying "Nishi no Fuji, Higashi no Tsukuba". Its two peaks are honoured as a married couple, so the shrine is known for enmusubi, or matchmaking deities. The area also keeps the old toad-oil street-performance tradition known as gama no abura.

Is there a fee, and how do I reach the summits?

Visiting the shrine itself is free. To reach the two summits you can take the cable car for 590 yen or the ropeway for 630 yen, and from the top the Kanto Plain spreads out below. Clear days from autumn to winter give the widest views.
