About This Destination

A flat farming island off the Motobu Peninsula, 30 minutes by village ferry, with one steep rock in the middle: Gusukuyama, called Tatchu, 172 m high. In late April the Lily Festival fills the island and the ferries.

From Motobu Port the village ferry takes 30 minutes to cover about 10 km, and in normal times there are only four sailings a day each way, so plan the day around the return boat. Iejima itself is flat, about 8 km east to west, with sandy beaches on the south side and cliffs of around 60 m on the north. The exception is Gusukuyama, which everyone calls Tatchu: a 172 m rock that sticks up out of the fields slightly east of centre. The village says the rock is about 70 million years older than the island around it, pushed on top of younger rock as plates moved. A stepped path climbs from the car park on its south side, and most people reach the top in 15 to 20 minutes; it is steep and gets slippery after rain, but the summit looks over the whole island to Okinawa's main island. On the south coast, Nyatiya cave holds a lifting stone said to grant children to women who raise it; residents sheltered there during the war. The Lily Festival at Lily Field Park runs from late April into Golden Week, with a free shuttle from the port. Bring a hat: much of the island has little shade, and about a third of it is a US military airfield.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Iejima, and how much is the ferry?

Take the Ie village ferry from Motobu Port; the crossing is 30 minutes. Adults pay 730 yen one way or 1,390 yen return from Motobu. There are normally four sailings each way, the last leaving Ie at 16:00, and full sailings cannot be boarded.

How long does it take to climb Tatchu?

Most people take 15 to 20 minutes up a stepped path from the car park on the south side. The steps are steep and slippery when wet, so wear proper shoes and carry water in summer.

When is the Iejima Lily Festival?

It is held every year at Lily Field Park from late April into the Golden Week holidays, when Easter lilies and lilies from around the world bloom. Extra ferries run and a free shuttle goes from Ie Port to the park, but on the busiest days numbered tickets are handed out for morning boats from Motobu, so arrive early. The village site posts each year's dates.

Do I need a car on Iejima?

No. The island is about 8 km long and flat, so a rented bicycle or scooter from near the port is enough for Tatchu and the south coast. Taking your own car over needs a reservation and costs extra, from 3,150 yen one way for a car 3 to 4 m long.
