Echigo-Tsumari Art Field

Seven hundred and sixty square kilometres of rice terraces, forest and depopulating villages in the Niigata mountains, with more than 200 permanent artworks scattered across it. It is the largest art field in the world by area, and the size is the point: you drive between works, and the drive through the landscape is part of the exhibition.

Fram Kitagawa started the triennale in 2000 with an argument that was not primarily about art. This is snow country, losing young people for decades, with schools closing and houses standing empty. Putting art into those specific buildings, and asking artists to work with the people still living there, was proposed as a way to give the villages a reason to be visited. It has worked well enough that the model has been copied across Japan, Setouchi included.

The works to see: the Kiyotsu Gorge tunnel, where a mirrored pool at the far end reflects the rock walls into a perfect circle and which is now the most photographed thing in Niigata; Christian Boltanski's installation in a closed school, built from the sound of heartbeats and the memory of the children who left; James Turrell's House of Light, a guesthouse with a sliding roof that you can book and sleep in; Kusama Yayoi's flowers in a rice field; and Matsudai Nohbutai, a building on stilts among the terraces.

Practical. A car is essential; buses exist but will cost you the day. Many works are outdoors and closed or buried between December and April, when two to four metres of snow fall here. The triennale runs every three years, most recently in 2024, but the permanent works are open in summer and autumn regardless.
