About This Destination
Spanning 760 square kilometers of rural Niigata, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is the world's largest outdoor art festival showcasing hundreds of installations across rice terraces and villages.
The Echigo-Tsumari Art Field transforms the rural satoyama landscape of southern Niigata into a vast open-air museum where contemporary art and nature intertwine. Since its inaugural triennale in 2000, over 200 permanent artworks by artists from around the world have been installed across rice paddies, abandoned schools, and mountain villages. The Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET), housed in a striking building designed by Hiroshi Hara, serves as the central hub and features rotating exhibitions alongside a permanent collection. Visitors can explore the region by car or bus, discovering sculptures, earthworks, and immersive installations that celebrate the relationship between humans and the land.
