Azuchi Castle Ruins
About This Destination
Azuchi Castle was one of Oda Nobunaga’s most ambitious projects. Construction began in 1576 and the castle was completed three years later, only to burn after Nobunaga’s death in 1582. Its brief life contrasts with its lasting place in Japanese history, with the name Azuchi still attached to the artistic and political world of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Today the visit follows stone steps into a wooded archaeological landscape. Walls, terraces and foundation stones survive, but the celebrated main tower does not. Take time to notice the width and direction of the approaches and the changing levels of the site; these are the clearest clues to the scale of the vanished complex. A model or reconstruction in a separate museum should not be confused with a building on this hill.
The station-to-entrance walk is only the beginning of the outing, since exploring the ruins involves a sustained ascent. Wear suitable footwear and check the official site for entry arrangements and weather-related restrictions. Allow enough time to descend comfortably before continuing your journey around the Lake Biwa area.
