About This Destination
The ornate mausoleum of Date Masamune, Zuihoden is a stunning example of Momoyama-period architecture with elaborate gold leaf and lacquer decorations set among towering cedar trees.
Zuihoden is the elaborate mausoleum of Date Masamune, the powerful feudal lord who founded Sendai. Built in 1637 following his death, the original structure was tragically destroyed in the air raids of 1945 but was faithfully reconstructed in 1979 using traditional techniques. The mausoleum showcases the extravagant Momoyama architectural style with intricate carvings, vivid colors, gold leaf, and black lacquer that rivals the splendor of Nikko Toshogu. The approach through a long avenue of towering Japanese cedars creates a solemn and atmospheric journey to the hilltop site. The adjacent museum displays artifacts excavated from the burial site, including armor fragments and personal effects of the Date clan lords.
