About This Destination

One of Japan's most important and popular temples, home to the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan.
Zenko-ji is one of the most important and frequently visited temples in Japan, attracting over six million pilgrims annually. Founded in the 7th century, it houses what is believed to be the first Buddhist image ever brought to Japan in 552 AD, a secret statue that has never been publicly displayed. The temple is unique in belonging to no particular Buddhist sect and welcoming all people regardless of gender, social status, or sect. A highlight is the Okaidan pitch-black passage beneath the main hall where visitors grope in complete darkness to touch the Key to Paradise, said to grant salvation.
