About This Destination

Toyota's car museum in Nagakute traces motoring from the first petrol cars of the late 19th century to today with about 140 vehicles from Japan, Europe and the US, most kept in running order. Adults pay 1,200 yen.

Do not mix this up with the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology in central Nagoya, which is about looms and factories. This one, opened in 1989 for Toyota's 50th anniversary, is about cars, and many of them are not Toyotas. The main Car Building lines up about 140 vehicles from Japan, Europe and the US in date order, from the petrol pioneers of the 1880s and 1890s through pre-war luxury cars and post-war family saloons to recent models, and most are kept in working condition. Since a 2019 rearrangement, Japanese and foreign cars stand side by side by period rather than in separate halls. The Culture Building next door covers car culture: posters, toys, mascots and other motoring ephemera. Its first and third floors are free. Allow two to three hours if you read the labels. Getting there is the slow part from central Nagoya: ride the Higashiyama subway line to the end at Fujigaoka, change to the Linimo maglev line, and walk five minutes from Geidai-dori Station. Ghibli Park is also on the Linimo line.
