SCMaglev and Railway Park
About This Destination
Three trains stand side by side in the symbol exhibit, each one a world speed record. The C62 17 steam locomotive hit 129 km/h in 1954, a world record for narrow-gauge steam. The 300X test train, the 955 type, reached 443 km/h in 1996, and the MLX01-1 superconducting maglev ran 581 km/h on the Yamanashi test line in 2003. There are 39 real cars in all, which you can step inside, among them four 0 series Shinkansen cars, including the type 36 dining car, the only one of its kind left, and an N700 that tested the first car-body tilting system on a Shinkansen. The museum also has what JR Central calls one of the largest model railway dioramas in Japan, showing the scenery along the Tokaido Shinkansen, and a set of simulators. The N700 driving simulator costs 500 yen for about 15 minutes and is sold first come, first served at the information desk, with one simulator ticket per person or group; on busy days staff hand out numbered tickets before opening. Adults pay 1,200 yen. The museum opened on March 14, 2011, and Tuesdays are the regular closed day.
