Get DirectionsFrequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Towada-Hachimantai National Park?
For the Lake Towada and Oirase side, buses run from Aomori and Hachinohe. For the Hachimantai side, buses run from Morioka. A car gives the most freedom across this spread-out park.
What is the park known for?
The park is known for the vast caldera Lake Towada and the mossy Oirase Gorge, the sacred Osorezan area nearby, the steaming volcanic plateaus at Hachimantai, and storied onsen like Nyuto and Goshogake.
When is the best time to visit?
Fresh green is best in June and July, and spectacular foliage runs from late September to late October. In winter much of the high country closes, though the 'snow corridor' on the Hachimantai Aspite Line reopens dramatically in mid-April.
