About This Destination
Spanning Akita and Aomori prefectures, this national park encompasses the serene Lake Towada and the volcanic Hachimantai plateau, renowned for spectacular autumn foliage and alpine scenery.
Towada-Hachimantai National Park is one of northern Honshu's most impressive natural areas, combining the deep blue caldera lake of Towada with the rolling volcanic plateau of Hachimantai. Lake Towada, formed by ancient volcanic activity, is surrounded by dense forests that explode in brilliant reds and golds each autumn, making it one of Japan's premier fall foliage destinations. The Hachimantai area features a dramatic mountain driving route, bubbling mud pots, and alpine wetlands dotted with wildflowers in summer. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails ranging from gentle lakeside walks to challenging mountain treks across the volcanic landscape. The park is also home to the famous Oirase Gorge, a 14-kilometer stream valley with waterfalls and moss-covered rocks that is considered one of Japan's most beautiful walks.
