About This Destination

An 800-metre-high plateau in inland Hyogo covered by roughly 90 hectares of silver susuki pampas grass, with a flat 3.1 km loop trail (about 90 minutes). Spectacular when the grass turns golden in late autumn, and famous as a filming location for 'Norwegian Wood' and 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.'
Tonomine Highlands is a sweeping grassland plateau at around 800 metres elevation in Kamikawa, deep in the mountains of central Hyogo. Some 90 hectares of susuki (Japanese pampas grass) blanket the rolling hills, and the landscape changes dramatically with the seasons — fresh green in early summer, then a shimmering silver sea of feathery plumes that turns a glowing gold in late autumn. A well-maintained loop trail of about 3.1 km circles the basin in roughly 90 minutes on gentle, mostly flat paths, making it an easy and rewarding walk for all ages; side routes climb 0.8 km to the Tonomine summit or continue about 7 km to the neighbouring Mineyama Highlands for longer hikes. The otherworldly grasslands have made Tonomine a sought-after film and drama location, most famously for the movie *Norwegian Wood* and Studio Ghibli's *The Tale of the Princess Kaguya*, as well as numerous NHK historical dramas. The peak season is late September to early November, when the susuki is at its best and the annual Susuki Festival brings food stalls and stage performances; this is also the busiest time, with the parking lot filling early on autumn weekends. There are few facilities up here, so bring water and warm layers — the highland is noticeably cooler and windier than the valleys below.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the pampas grass at Tonomine Highlands?

The susuki (pampas grass) is at its best from late September to early November, with late October usually the golden peak when the whole plateau glows in the low sun. Early summer offers fresh green grassland that is far quieter. Avoid winter, when the grass is brown and access roads can ice over. For the best light and photos, come in the late afternoon when the silver and gold plumes catch the sun.

How do I get to Tonomine Highlands, and is it accessible without a car?

By car it's about 40 minutes from the Kanzaki-Minami ramp on the Bantan Expressway up a winding mountain road, with paid parking at the entrance. Without a car it's harder: a direct seasonal bus runs from JR Teramae Station (Bantan Line) in about 60 minutes, mainly during the autumn susuki season. Outside that period buses are very limited, so a car or taxi is the practical option.

What films were shot at Tonomine Highlands and what else is nearby?

The plateau's grasslands appeared in the film 'Norwegian Wood' (2010) and Studio Ghibli's animated 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,' plus several NHK historical dramas. Nearby you can extend the trip to the neighbouring Mineyama Highlands (linked by a roughly 7 km trail), the Ginzan silver-mine town of Ikuno, and the Kamikawa countryside. Combining a couple of these makes a comfortable day out from Himeji or Osaka.
