About This Destination

An enchanting historic port town that inspired the Studio Ghibli film 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,' with traditional merchant houses, stone lanterns, and a scenic harbor.
Tomonoura is a beautifully preserved Edo-period port on the Seto Inland Sea, tucked onto a small peninsula south of Fukuyama. For centuries it thrived as a 'tide-waiting port,' where ships paused for the currents to turn, and that prosperity left a townscape of weathered merchant houses, narrow lanes, temples, and a stone-built harbour crowned by the iconic joyato, a tall Edo-era lantern tower that still marks the waterfront. The town wears its history lightly: Sakamoto Ryoma and his crew famously came ashore here after the Iroha Maru sank offshore in 1867, and the hillside Taichoro hall in Fukuzenji temple frames one of the loveliest views in Japan across the islands. Tomonoura's dreamy, time-stopped atmosphere is said to have inspired Hayao Miyazaki, who stayed nearby while conceiving Studio Ghibli's 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.' Visitors come to wander the lanes, sip the amber houmeishu herbal liqueur brewed here since the Edo period, eat sea bream fresh from the Inland Sea, and take a short boat across to the island of Sensuijima. It is an unhurried, atmospheric half-day from Fukuyama.

How do I get to Tomonoura?

Take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen to Fukuyama Station, then a Tomotetsu Bus from the south exit (about 30 minutes, 530 yen). Buses run every 15–30 minutes. By car, it's about 20 minutes from the Fukuyama-Higashi IC of the Sanyo Expressway. Once in Tomonoura, the historic district is best explored on foot.

What are the must-see spots in Tomonoura?

Don't miss the Joyato stone lantern at the harbor (dating to 1859 and the symbol of Tomonoura), the Iroha-Maru Museum about Sakamoto Ryoma's 1867 shipwreck, Fukuzenji Temple's tatami-room view across the bay, and Taichoro reception hall. Climb to Iouji Temple for panoramic harbor views, and walk the old streets between traditional merchant houses. The town also inspired the cliffside village in Studio Ghibli's 'Ponyo'.

When is the best time to visit Tomonoura?

Spring (April for cherry blossoms around Iouji Temple) and autumn (mild walking weather and fall colors) are most pleasant. The Tomonoura Bentenjima Fireworks in late May and the May Tai-ami sea bream net fishing demonstration are lively highlights. Visit on weekdays to enjoy the quiet alleyways without crowds; sunset over the harbor is unforgettable.

What food is Tomonoura known for?

Sea bream (tai) is the local star — try taimeshi (rice steamed with sea bream), tai chazuke (sea bream over rice with broth), and tai somen (sea bream with thin noodles). Houmeishu, a traditional medicinal herbal liqueur unique to Tomonoura since the Edo period, makes a distinctive souvenir. Several cafes inside renovated merchant houses serve coffee and sweets with harbor views.
