About This Destination

Skeletal remains of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and symbol of world peace.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly called the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), is the skeletal remains of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall that was destroyed by the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. It serves as a memorial to those killed and a symbol of hope for world peace, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The dome is located within the larger Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which also contains the Peace Memorial Museum, the Cenotaph, the Children's Peace Monument, and the Flame of Peace that will burn until all nuclear weapons are eliminated. The museum provides a deeply moving account of the bombing and its aftermath. Free English volunteer guides are available at the park. Hiroshima is accessible by shinkansen from Osaka (about 1.5 hours) and Tokyo (about 4 hours).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park?

From Hiroshima Station, take the tram (streetcar) Line 2 or 6 to Genbaku Dome-mae stop (about 15 minutes, ¥240 flat fare in the city centre — raised from ¥220 on 2024-10-01). The A-Bomb Dome is right at the stop. Alternatively, it's a 15-minute walk from Hatchobori or 25 minutes from Hiroshima Station along the river.

How much time should I plan for the Peace Park and Museum?

Allow 2–3 hours minimum. The Peace Memorial Museum alone takes 1–2 hours and is deeply moving. Combined with walking through the park monuments, the A-Bomb Dome, the Cenotaph, and the Children's Peace Monument, half a day is ideal. Many visitors find they want extra quiet time after the museum.

Is there an admission fee?

The park and A-Bomb Dome are free to visit any time. The Peace Memorial Museum admission is 200 yen for adults, 100 yen for high-school students, and free for younger children. Free English-speaking volunteer guides are available at the park — check the Rest House at the south entrance for schedules and reservations.

When is the best time to visit the Peace Memorial?

Spring (cherry blossoms along the rivers in late March–early April) and autumn give the most pleasant weather. The annual Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6th draws very large crowds; visiting on August 5th or 7th gives a more reflective experience. Mornings before 10 AM are quietest at the museum any time of year.
