About This Destination

A cluster of uninhabited islands in the Kitan Strait off Wakayama, where overgrown Meiji-era gun batteries and brick tunnels swallowed by forest have earned it the nickname 'the Castle in the Sky island.' Reached by ferry from Kada Port, with a 2.5–4 hour hiking loop past the famous No. 3 Battery ruins and a white Western-style lighthouse.
Tomogashima is a group of small uninhabited islands floating in the Kitan Strait between Wakayama and Awaji Island; the main one, Okinoshima, is the one visitors explore. From the Meiji era through World War II the islands were a restricted military zone guarding the approach to Osaka Bay, studded with coastal gun batteries, ammunition stores, and brick tunnels. Abandoned and left to the forest for decades, these red-brick ruins are now draped in moss and creeping vines, and their dreamlike, half-reclaimed look has made the island hugely popular as a real-world version of the floating fortress from Studio Ghibli's *Castle in the Sky* (Laputa) — though the resemblance is unofficial. The undisputed highlight is the No. 3 Battery ruin, a sunken brick complex where you can wander the arched magazine rooms and underground passages (a flashlight helps in the dark sections). A well-marked loop links the No. 2 Battery, a hilltop observation deck with views across the strait, the No. 3 Battery, and a striking white Western-style lighthouse standing over the cobalt sea; walking the popular circuit takes about 2.5 hours, and seeing the whole island comfortably takes 3–4 hours. Getting there is part of the adventure: a train to Kada, a walk to the port, and a short ferry across. Bring water, snacks, and proper shoes — the island has only minimal facilities, the trails are unpaved and hilly, and you must catch the last ferry back.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Tomogashima and how much is the ferry?

From Nankai Wakayamashi Station, take the Kada Line about 25 minutes to Kada Station, then walk roughly 20 minutes to Kada Port. The Tomogashima Kisen ferry crosses to Okinoshima in about 20 minutes and costs around 2,200 yen round trip for adults and 1,100 yen for children. Departures are limited (only a handful per day), so check the timetable in advance — and note the boat doesn't run in bad weather.

How long does it take to hike Tomogashima?

The popular loop linking the No. 2 Battery, the observation deck, the No. 3 Battery ruins, and the lighthouse takes about 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace. Allow 3–4 hours to see the whole island comfortably and explore the ruins. Time it around the ferry schedule so you don't miss the last boat — many visitors take a morning ferry over and an afternoon one back. The trails are hilly and unpaved, so wear proper walking shoes.

Is Tomogashima suitable for families and is there an entry fee?

There's no entry fee for the island itself — you only pay for the ferry. It's a fun adventure for families with older children who can handle a few hours of hilly walking and dark tunnels, but it's not stroller-friendly and there are very few facilities, so come prepared with water, snacks, a flashlight, and sun protection. Toilets are limited. Because it's a wild island, watch footing around the unfenced ruins and cliffs, especially with kids.
