About This Destination

Dramatic volcanic columnar basalt cliffs stretching one kilometer along the Sea of Japan coast, a rare geological formation.
Tojinbo is a stunning stretch of columnar basalt cliffs along the Sea of Japan coast in Fukui Prefecture, formed by volcanic activity over 13 million years ago. The hexagonal and pentagonal rock columns rise up to 25 meters above the sea and extend for about one kilometer, making this one of only three such formations in the world. Visitors can walk freely along the cliff edges for breathtaking views, or take a sightseeing boat for a dramatic perspective from the water below. The Tojinbo Tower offers panoramic views of the coastline and on clear days you can see all the way to the Noto Peninsula. The area is particularly beautiful at sunset when the cliffs glow orange against the darkening sea.
