About This Destination

A UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving the largest virgin beech forest in East Asia, Shirakami-Sanchi offers pristine wilderness, crystal-clear streams, and the mystical Juniko twelve lakes.
Shirakami-Sanchi was designated as one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993, protecting over 130 square kilometers of virgin Siebold's beech forest that has remained untouched for 8,000 years. This pristine mountain wilderness straddles the border of Aomori and Akita prefectures, harboring an extraordinarily rich ecosystem including Japanese black bears, Japanese serows, and 87 species of birds. The most popular attraction is the Juniko (Twelve Lakes) area, where the cobalt blue Aoike pond is so clear that fallen beech logs are visible several meters below the surface. Hiking trails range from easy boardwalk paths through the beech forest to challenging multi-day treks into the core wilderness zone, which requires a permit to enter. The area is also home to the Anmon Falls, a series of three dramatic waterfalls accessible via a scenic riverside trail.
