About This Destination

Called the 'last clear stream of Japan', the Shimanto River flows undammed for 196 kilometers through lush Kochi countryside, ideal for canoeing and cycling.
The Shimanto River earned its reputation as Japan's last unspoiled river thanks to its remarkably clear waters flowing freely without a single dam along its main course. The river is famous for its chinkabashi (submersible bridges) — low bridges built without railings that are designed to submerge during floods rather than resist them, creating iconic photo opportunities. Canoeing and kayaking are the most popular ways to experience the river, with half-day and full-day tours available for all skill levels from spring through autumn. Cycling along the riverside roads is equally rewarding, with gentle routes and rental bicycles available at Nakamura Station. The area is also known for freshwater delicacies including ayu sweetfish, river shrimp, and freshwater eel grilled over charcoal.
