About This Destination

A 70-kilometer cycling route across six islands connected by spectacular bridges over the Seto Inland Sea.
The Shimanami Kaido ranks among the world's great cycling routes, a 70-kilometer journey connecting Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture across six islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Dedicated bicycle lanes run alongside the traffic on each of the spectacular bridges, offering unobstructed views down to the islands and glittering water below. Each island along the route has developed its own character. Ikuchijima is covered in citrus groves, the scent of oranges filling the air in season. Hakatajima preserves the heritage of traditional salt production. Small cafes and rest stops punctuate the journey, serving local specialties and cold drinks to passing cyclists. Rental bicycles are available at terminals on both ends, and a convenient drop-off system allows riders to complete the route one-way rather than doubling back. The full crossing takes most of a day at a leisurely pace, though staying overnight on one of the islands offers a deeper experience of Seto Inland Sea life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to cycle the Shimanami Kaido?

The full 70 km route takes 4–6 hours for fit cyclists, or a full day at a leisurely pace with stops. Many people cycle halfway and take a ferry back, or stay overnight on one of the islands. E-bikes are widely available and highly recommended for casual riders or anyone short on time.

Where do I rent a bike for Shimanami Kaido?

Main rental terminals are at Onomichi Port (Hiroshima side) and Sunrise Itoyama in Imabari (Ehime side). You can drop off at either end or at any of the 13 terminals along the route. Reserve online in advance, especially for e-bikes and during weekends or holidays. Basic rental is around 1,100 yen per day plus a 1,100 yen one-way drop-off fee.

Is Shimanami Kaido difficult for beginners?

It's beginner-friendly. The route is mostly flat with dedicated bike paths — the only climbs are the bridge approaches, which use gentle ramps. E-bikes eliminate the bridge climbs entirely. The biggest challenge is the distance, not the difficulty: start early, pace yourself, and don't skip the island detours that lead to citrus orchards, salt fields, and small cafes.
