How do I get to the Satsuma Peninsula highlights?
From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line reaches Ibusuki in about 60–80 minutes (¥1,020) — the scenic 'Ibusuki no Tamatebako' tourist train takes 55 minutes (¥4,000 incl. seat reservation). For Chiran, take the bus from Kagoshima-Chuo (75 min, ¥970). A rental car gives you flexibility to combine Chiran, Ibusuki, and Cape Nagasakibana in one day.
What is the Ibusuki sand bath and how does it work?
Visitors put on a yukata, lie on the beach, and are buried up to the neck in volcanically heated black sand. The heat (around 50°C) and pressure are said to improve circulation. Saraku Sand Bath Hall (¥1,100, includes yukata and indoor bath access) is the most popular venue, open 8:30–21:00. Sessions last 10–15 minutes; you should not exceed 15 minutes for safety.
Why visit the Chiran Peace Museum?
The museum preserves over 14,000 letters, photos, and personal effects of the kamikaze pilots — many of them teenagers — who flew their final missions from Chiran in 1945. Entry ¥500 (combined with samurai gardens ¥830). Open 9:00–17:00. The exhibits are deeply sobering; English audio guides are available. Allow 1.5–2 hours. The adjacent samurai street with seven preserved gardens (Edo-period) makes a contemplative pairing.
Can I see Yakushima from Cape Nagasakibana?
Yes, on clear days — Yakushima is about 60 km southwest. The view is best in winter mornings when the air is clearest. The cape (free entry) also offers panoramic views of Mount Kaimon (the 'Satsuma Fuji'), a perfect cone-shaped volcano nearby. There's a small shrine at the cape and a quiet lighthouse path. Allow 30–45 minutes; combine with Mount Kaimon hiking for a half-day excursion.
