About This Destination

Southern island famous as the site where firearms first arrived in Japan and home to JAXA's spectacular seaside rocket launch facility.
A flat island south of Kagoshima. Portuguese traders introduced firearms to Japan here in 1543, changing warfare and society. Now equally known for JAXA's Tanegashima Space Center—often called the world's most beautiful launch pad because it sits right on the ocean. Free tours and museum; rocket launches draw crowds from across Japan. Good surfing beaches, nice coastline, mild subtropical climate. High-speed ferry or flight from Kagoshima.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Tanegashima from Kagoshima?

By high-speed jetfoil 'Toppy/Rocket' from Kagoshima Port to Nishinoomote — about 95 minutes, ¥8,400 one-way. Or by JAC flight from Kagoshima Airport to Tanegashima Airport — 30 minutes, around ¥12,000–18,000 depending on dates. Slower car ferry takes 3.5 hours but is much cheaper (~¥4,000) if you're bringing a vehicle.

Can I watch a rocket launch at the Tanegashima Space Center?

Yes — JAXA publishes launch schedules a few weeks in advance at global.jaxa.jp. Designated public viewing sites (Nagasakihana, Uchugaoka Park) open on launch days; arrive 2–3 hours early as roads close. Outside launch days, free guided tours of the launch complex run twice daily on weekdays, plus a free space exhibition hall (open 9:30–17:00, closed Mondays).

What else is there to do beyond the rocket center?

Tanegashima Development Center Museum tells the story of the 1543 Portuguese arrival and matchlock guns. Surfers head to Takezaki and Hamada beaches — the island has waves year-round and is a Japan surfing classic. Cycling the flat coastline is popular. Don't leave without trying anno-imo (sweet potato) pudding and brown-sugar shochu.

Should I rent a car on Tanegashima?

Strongly recommended — public buses are infrequent and the island stretches about 60 km north to south. Major rental agencies (Toyota, Times, OTS) operate at both the airport and Nishinoomote port. Reserve early during launch periods, summer holidays, and Golden Week, when cars sell out weeks in advance. Daily rates start around ¥5,000.
