About This Destination
Iconic castle featuring golden shachi roof ornaments and a faithfully reconstructed Honmaru Palace.
Nagoya Castle, built in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, is one of Japan's largest and most important castles. The castle is instantly recognizable by its pair of golden shachi (mythical dolphin-like creatures) perched on the roof of the main tower. The Honmaru Palace, painstakingly reconstructed using traditional techniques and completed in 2018, showcases stunning painted fusuma sliding doors and elaborate wooden carvings. The castle grounds are also famous for their cherry blossoms in spring.
