About This Destination

At 2,017 m on the border with Saitama and Yamanashi, Kumotori is the highest point in Tokyo and one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. From the Kamosawa trailhead it is 10.7 km and over six hours one way, so most hikers spend a night in a hut or at a campsite.

Tokyo's highest point is not a day trip for most people. The Okutama tourism association puts the standard route from Kamosawa at 10.7 km and about 6 hours 20 minutes one way, and Tokyo's park rangers advise planning a night in a mountain hut rather than racing the daylight. The reward is a summit with an almost 360-degree view: Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps and, on a clear day, the city toward central Tokyo. Beds and tent pitches are at Kumotori Sanso, Nanatsuishi hut, Sanjo-no-yu and the Gojunindaira campsite. Above 2,000 m it is about 12°C colder than the city, and even in May the nights fall below freezing, so pack for cold whatever the forecast in Shinjuku says. The summit area is a special protection zone of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park: no picking plants and no tents outside the designated sites. Toilets are at Kosode-norikoshi, Nanatsuishi hut, Gojunindaira and near the summit, and nowhere else. Start early. The tourism association asks hikers to reach the trailhead by 9:00 and to file a climbing plan before setting off; the boxes are at JR Ome Line stations, not at the trailhead, so post it on the way through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I climb Mount Kumotori in a day?

Fit hikers do, but it is not recommended. The Kamosawa route takes about 6 hours 20 minutes one way, so the Okutama tourism association and Tokyo's park rangers both recommend a night in a hut or at a campsite.

Where can I stay on the mountain?

The Okutama tourism association lists Kumotori Sanso, Nanatsuishi hut, Sanjo-no-yu and the Gojunindaira campsite. Book ahead and check each one's season before you go.

How do I get to the trailhead without a car?

Take the JR Ome Line to Okutama Station, then a Nishi Tokyo Bus from stop 2 toward Tabayama or Kamosawa-nishi to the Kamosawa stop, about 34 minutes. Buses are few, so plan around the timetable.

How cold is it at the top?

Tokyo's park rangers say it is about 12°C colder than central Tokyo, and that even in May the temperature at night drops below freezing. Bring a warm layer, a headlamp and rain gear on any trip.
