Michi-no-Eki Utoro Shirietoku
About This Destination
Utoro calls itself the town with Japan’s biggest salmon catch, and the restaurant here leans on that. The menu moves with the fish: tokishirazu salmon in spring, pink salmon in summer, top-grade autumn salmon in the fall and salt-cured salmon in winter, with grilled hokke and Shari pork bowls alongside. Bafun sea urchin appears for a few months from spring into summer.
The station sits on Route 334 in Utoro, right beside the Shiretoko World Heritage Center, so it works as a first stop before the Five Lakes or a sightseeing boat. The cowberry takeout counter sells venison burgers made with Ezo deer and a lingonberry soft-serve that is the station’s best seller. The shop carries salmon rolls, salmon ramen and other goods from the operator’s own factory.
Plan around the season. The Shiretoko Pass on Route 334 to Rausu is closed from November to April, so in winter Utoro is a dead end from Shari. The shop normally opens 9:00 to 17:00, staying open later in busy periods, and the restaurant serves 10:00 to 15:00. The station closes every Thursday in December and from December 29 to January 3.
