About This Destination

Rebuilt Shizugawa after the 2011 tsunami, all in one place: the Sansan shopping street, the Minamisanriku 311 Memorial and the BRT stop. Come for a seafood bowl, then cross the cedar bridge to the memorial park overlooking the bay.

Michi-no-Eki Sansan Minamisanriku is not a farm stand with a car park. It opened on 1 October 2022 as Miyagi's eighteenth roadside station, joining the rebuilt Sansan shopping street, the Minamisanriku 311 Memorial, a visitor center and the JR Shizugawa BRT stop. Kengo Kuma's office designed it, as it did the shopping street before it.

Lunch is the easy part. Restaurants on the shopping street serve the Minamisanriku Kirakira-don, a seafood bowl whose topping changes with the season, so do not expect sea urchin in October. Popular counters can have a queue before opening. Afterwards, walk the Nakahashi, a bridge of Minamisanriku cedar, to the memorial park. From the Hill of Prayer you look over Shizugawa Bay and the steel frame of the former disaster-prevention building.

The memorial has free areas and ticketed galleries, and it closes on Tuesdays. If you plan to see the galleries, allow time rather than squeezing them in before you drive on. Each shop sets its own hours.
