Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri
About This Destination
Fishing boats come and go past the windows here, at the point where the Abashiri River meets the harbor, and on a clear day the Shiretoko peninsula shows on the horizon. From late January to March the station turns into the terminal for the Aurora, the icebreaker that takes passengers out into the drift ice. The wooden deck on the ground floor becomes the boarding deck, and the building fills up.
The Kinema-kan food court on the second floor is where to eat. Abashiri zangi-don is the local dish: fried salmon on rice, despite zangi usually meaning chicken in Hokkaido. Abashiri chanpon and scallop salt ramen are also on the menu. The building also has a takeout counter, a souvenir shop with Okhotsk products and the city's tourist information desk.
Outside drift-ice season it is a calmer place to stop in central Abashiri on the way to Shiretoko or the lakes. In winter, book the Aurora in advance and dress for wind on the open deck. The building is open 9:00 to 18:00 year-round and closes on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
