About This Destination

A spread-out station on Route 236 in a farming village south of Obihiro, with a free bean museum, a pioneer farmhouse and a cluster of small cafes and takeout shops built around local edamame, chicken and eggs.

Nakasatsunai is bean country, and the station makes that obvious. The Beans House is a free museum of beans from around the world, and the grounds also have a pioneer memorial hall and a settlers' farmhouse moved here from elsewhere in the village. None of it takes long, which is the point: this is a place to stretch your legs on the long straight run down Route 236 from Obihiro toward Hiroo and Cape Erimo.

Food is split across several small buildings rather than one big restaurant. The Country Plaza has the information desk, a shop with local sweets and products, and the Weathercock Cafe, which cooks with village produce. The farm stand's egg vending machine is a local favorite, and the takeout shops sell curry, ice cream and dishes built around Nakasatsunai chicken and edamame.

Winter is the catch. From December to March the Country Plaza closes on Mondays and shuts an hour earlier, and some of the restaurants close for weeks at a stretch. If you are driving through Tokachi in the cold months, check which shops are open before counting on lunch here.
