Michi-no-Eki Kirishima
About This Destination
Most people know this place as Kirishima Shinwa-no-Sato Park; the roadside station is the same site under another name. It sits on Route 223 on the slopes below the Kirishima peaks, and the reason to stop is the view. On a clear day you look down over Kinko Bay to Sakurajima, and on a very clear one you can pick out the cone of Mount Kaimon at the tip of the Satsuma Peninsula.
The Kami-no-Kura restaurant does Kagoshima kurobuta (black pork), as tonkatsu and shabu-shabu set meals, with the bay in the windows. Hot Kirishima-kan, the product shop, sells local condiments such as black pork miso, persimmon vinegar and blueberry jam. The park itself is free; the 390-meter Super Slider, a sled-style run down the hillside, and the other rides cost extra.
Mountain weather can hide the view, and on a hazy day you may see nothing at all, so check the sky before making the climb for the view. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm, but from June 2026 the restaurant closes every Wednesday until further notice and is not taking reservations. Kirishima Jingu Shrine is a short drive away.
