Mount Karakuni
About This Destination
Karakuni is the tallest of the Kirishima volcanoes at 1,700 meters, and its summit sits on the line between Kagoshima and Miyazaki. The crater is roughly 900 meters wide and 300 meters deep, and after long rain a pond forms in the bottom. The standard route starts at the Karakunidake trailhead on Ebino Kogen, a plateau at about 1,200 meters on the Miyazaki side with the Ebino Eco Museum Center, so the climb is about 500 meters. From the top you look south along the chain of peaks to Takachiho-no-mine and, on clear days, to Sakurajima. Winter often brings snow and rime ice. The catch is the volcanoes. Shinmoedake has been at alert level 2 since 17 October 2025, and the Japan Meteorological Agency warns of large rocks within about 2 km of its crater. Ebino City's notice from that day lets you climb Karakuni from the Karakunidake trailhead or via Onamiike, but not descend toward the Iwoyama north trailhead, and the route over Shishikodake stays closed. Iwoyama is at level 1, yet its gas still shuts part of Prefectural Road 1. Check Ebino City's page and the JMA bulletin on the day. Kirishima Onsen and Kirishima Shrine, both in their own entries, lie below on the Kagoshima side.

Can I climb Mount Karakuni now?
Under Ebino City's notice of 17 October 2025, when Shinmoedake went to alert level 2, you can climb from the Karakunidake trailhead or via Onamiike, but not descend toward the Iwoyama north trailhead, and the route via Shishikodake is closed. Levels change, so check Ebino City's page and the JMA bulletin on the day.
Can I hike on from Karakuni to Shinmoedake or Takachiho-no-mine?
No. The trail over Shishikodake toward Shinmoedake is closed, and the Japan Meteorological Agency warns of large rocks within about 2 km of Shinmoedake's crater. Climb Karakuni as an out-and-back hike, or by the Onamiike routes.
How do I get to the trailhead?
Drive to Ebino Kogen on the Miyazaki side. Prefectural Road 30 is open from Ebino through to Kirishima City, but part of Prefectural Road 1 near Iwoyama is closed because of volcanic gas and opens only provisionally on some weekends.
What is the summit like in winter?
The summit often has snow and rime ice in winter, even though this is southern Kyushu. Bring winter gear and check conditions at the Ebino Eco Museum Center before setting out.
