Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa
About This Destination
This is an aquarium built for an evening out as much as for a school trip. It sits inside the Shinagawa Prince Hotel, about two minutes from the Takanawa exit of Shinagawa Station, and about 20,000 animals of some 350 species live in tanks dressed up with projection mapping and colored lighting that change with the seasons. The main event is the dolphin performance in The Stadium, a round pool you can watch from any side. Daytime shows are bright and get the audience involved; after dark the program switches to a version built around sound, light and projected images. The show comes with the 2,800-yen adult ticket, but seating is first come, first served and you can be turned away when it is full, so arrive early for the time you want. Beyond the dolphins there is the Wonder Tube, the Jellyfish Ramble, and two indoor rides, Port of Pirates and Dolphin Party, at 500 yen each on top of entry. Allow about two hours including the show. Opening hours change from one period to the next, so check the website before an evening visit. Sengaku-ji, the temple of the 47 ronin, is in the same Takanawa district.
