About This Destination

One of Japan's 12 original castles, this hilltop fortress offers sweeping views over Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea.
Matsuyama Castle is one of the most impressive original castles in Japan, perched atop 132-meter Mount Katsuyama in the heart of Matsuyama city. Built in 1603 and later rebuilt in 1854, the castle retains its original three-story main tower along with an extensive network of turrets, gates, and stone walls that rank among the best preserved in the country. A ropeway and chairlift carry visitors up the hillside, though walking trails are also available. From the top floor, panoramic views extend across the city to the Seto Inland Sea and the mountains of Shikoku. The castle is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season when over 200 trees bloom on the grounds. Open 9:00 to 17:00, with extended hours in summer.
