About This Destination

One of Japan's 12 original castles, a small but beautifully preserved hilltop tower overlooking Uwajima Bay.
Uwajima Castle is an intimate and authentic example of an original Edo-period castle, perched on an 80-meter hill overlooking Uwajima Bay. The three-story tower was rebuilt in 1666 by Date Munetoshi and is one of the smallest among the 12 surviving original castles, yet its elegant proportions and peaceful hilltop setting make it a rewarding visit. The climb through the wooded hillside takes about 15 minutes and passes through old stone walls covered in moss. From the top, enjoy views over the city and bay. Uwajima itself is known for its bull fighting tradition and fresh tai-meshi (sea bream rice). The castle is open 9:00 to 17:00 with very affordable admission.
