About This Destination
One of Japan's five National Treasure castles, famous for its striking black exterior and alpine mountain backdrop.
Matsumoto Castle is one of only five castles in Japan designated as a National Treasure, and the oldest six-story wooden castle keep in the country. Built in the late 16th century, its striking black and white exterior earned it the nickname Crow Castle. The castle sits in a flatland surrounded by a moat, with the Japanese Alps providing a dramatic mountain backdrop. The interior preserves steep wooden staircases, gun ports, and arrow slits from its feudal era. The top floor observation deck offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains. The castle grounds include a secondary tower connected by a corridor, added later as a moon-viewing platform. Located a 15-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station, the castle is a popular day trip from Tokyo or Nagoya.
