About This Destination

A flower and bird park on the north shore of Lake Shinji, built around a heated greenhouse of about 8,000 m² where begonias and fuchsias bloom all year. Owl shows, a daily penguin walk and a shoebill. A good rainy-day stop near Matsue.

Matsue Vogel Park sits on a slope above the north shore of Lake Shinji, with its own station on the Ichibata Railway. Vogel is German for bird, and the park is half birds, half flowers. The centre is the Center House, a heated greenhouse of about 8,000 square metres, one of the largest in Japan, where around 10,000 begonias, fuchsias and other flowering plants hang in baskets year-round.

The birds are the reason many people come. There are more than 20 species of owl, with owl shows at 11:00 and 15:00. Cape penguins go for a walk through the park at 10:30 and 14:00. It is also the only place in the Chugoku region showing a shoebill, the large grey stork famous for standing perfectly still.

Because the main areas are under glass, it works well on a cold or rainy day. The train takes about 16 minutes from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station and stops right at the entrance. By car it is about 20 minutes from Matsue-Nishi IC, with the first two hours of parking free.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the owl show and the penguin walk at Matsue Vogel Park?

The penguin walk usually runs daily at 10:30 and 14:00, and the owl show at 11:00 and 15:00. Arriving around 10:00 lets you see both morning sessions. Times can change for events, so check on the day.

How do I get to Matsue Vogel Park from Matsue or Izumo?

Take the Ichibata Railway Kita-Matsue Line from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station, about 16 minutes, to Matsue Vogel Park Station, which is right at the park. The same line runs from Dentetsu-Izumoshi, so it fits into a day between Matsue and Izumo Taisha.
