Hagi Castle Ruins
About This Destination
Hagi Castle became the Mori clan’s base after the political upheaval that followed the Battle of Sekigahara. Mori Terumoto began establishing the castle here in 1604, with Mount Shizuki behind it and the sea nearby. The surrounding town developed around this seat of the Choshu domain, whose later history reaches into the making of modern Japan.
The keep no longer stands, so the visit centers on moats, stone walls and the landscape of Shizuki Park. Walk around the surviving foundations and notice how water and the mountain restricted approaches to the castle. The open spaces give a different impression from Hagi’s narrow former samurai streets, making the two areas useful companions on the same itinerary.
Cherry blossoms bring many visitors in spring, but the stonework and seaside setting remain the main reasons to come throughout the year. A walk through the lower grounds does not require climbing Mount Shizuki. Reach the entrance by local bus or taxi from Higashi-Hagi Station, or continue on foot from the historic castle-town district.
