About This Destination
A series of stunning volcanic lakes near Mount Bandai, the Five Colored Lakes display mesmerizing hues of cobalt blue, emerald green, and rust red created by dissolved minerals.
Goshikinuma, or the Five Colored Lakes, is a collection of several dozen ponds and lakes formed by the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai. The lakes get their extraordinary colors from dissolved volcanic minerals, and each lake displays different hues that change with the seasons, weather, and time of day. A well-maintained 3.6-kilometer nature trail connects the major lakes, taking about 70 minutes to walk. The most famous lakes include Bishamon-numa with its deep cobalt blue, Ao-numa with vivid turquoise, and Aka-numa with its reddish hues. Autumn foliage reflected in the colorful waters creates particularly spectacular scenery.
