About This Destination

A lookout on the northern rim of the Aso caldera, about 936 meters high, with views over the plain and the reclining outline of the mountains known as the sleeping Buddha.

Daikanbo is a lookout on the northern outer rim of the Aso caldera in Aso City, standing at about 936 meters above sea level. From the viewing platform, visitors can see across the caldera floor to the central cones of Mount Aso, and the surrounding mountains form an outline that is often likened to a reclining Buddha. A short walk leads from the parking area to the observation point along the ridge. A rest house near the parking lot sells food and souvenirs. Access is easiest by car along the Milk Road, and admission is free.

It is easiest by car via the Milk Road (Route 45); the parking area is just below the lookout. By bus, take the Sugitate Onsen line from Aso Station and get off at Daikanbo-iriguchi.
