Beppu Onsen

Beppu is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, boasting more hot spring sources than any other resort in the country. The 'Hells of Beppu' (Jigoku Meguri) are a popular attraction featuring eight spectacular hot springs for viewing rather than bathing, each with unique characteristics such as boiling blue pools, blood-red waters, and bubbling mud. The city has eight distinct onsen areas, each with different water properties and bathing experiences. Sand baths at Beppu Beach and Kannawa are unique experiences where visitors are buried in naturally heated volcanic sand. Many affordable public bathhouses are scattered throughout the city, some costing as little as 100 yen. Beppu is easily accessible by Sonic limited express train from Hakata Station in about two hours.
