Almost every Japanese festival happens between spring and autumn. Chichibu holds its own in December, at night, in the cold, and that is exactly why it is worth the trip. Six floats hung with lanterns are pulled through town, and the moment everyone waits for is Dangozaka, a short steep slope near the end. Getting a float weighing over ten tonnes up it takes hundreds of people pulling on ropes, and it is slow enough that you can watch the whole thing decide itself. Fireworks run above it while the hauling happens, which almost no summer festival does because the two would compete.

Getting a good spot

December nights in Chichibu drop below freezing and the wait at Dangozaka is a long one. Dress for standing still outdoors for hours, not for walking. Return trains to Tokyo are heavily congested and run late that night.

Common questions

When is Chichibu Yomatsuri?

On 2 and 3 December every year. The floats move on the night of the 3rd, and the climb at Dangozaka is late in the evening.

Is it really cold?

Yes. Chichibu sits in a mountain basin and December nights go below freezing, and you will be standing still for hours waiting. Dress as you would for watching sport outdoors in winter.
