About This Destination
Yoshinogari is Japan's largest Yayoi-period archaeological site, featuring remarkably reconstructed ancient villages, watchtowers, and burial mounds spanning 700 years of history.
Yoshinogari Historical Park preserves and reconstructs a massive Yayoi-period settlement that thrived from around 400 BC to 300 AD. The site features over 100 reconstructed pit dwellings, elevated storehouses, and impressive watchtowers that bring ancient Japan vividly to life. Visitors can explore the inner moat settlement where the ruling class lived, the northern burial mound containing over 2,000 jar burials, and hands-on workshops where you can try ancient crafts like fire-making and magatama bead carving. The park is exceptionally well-maintained and informative, with excellent English signage throughout. Allow at least two to three hours to explore the full site, and visit during spring when cherry blossoms frame the ancient structures beautifully.
