About This Destination

A mountain temple with over 1,000 stone steps leading to breathtaking panoramic views, Yamadera inspired Matsuo Basho's famous haiku about the silence of cicadas.
Yamadera, formally known as Risshaku-ji, was founded in 860 and clings dramatically to the cliffs of a remote mountain in Yamagata Prefecture. The ascent of over 1,000 stone steps takes visitors through ancient cedar forests and past moss-covered stone lanterns to the Godaido observation platform at the summit. It was here in 1689 that the haiku master Matsuo Basho composed one of his most celebrated poems during his journey recorded in The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Each season brings its own beauty: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fiery maples in autumn, and a serene snow-covered landscape in winter. The temple complex includes several halls and sub-temples, with the Konponchudo main hall housing an eternal flame said to have burned continuously for over 1,000 years.
