About This Destination
A designated National Treasure, the Usuki Stone Buddhas comprise over 60 Buddhist figures carved into volcanic tuff cliffs dating from the late Heian to Kamakura periods.
The Usuki Stone Buddhas are a remarkable collection of over 60 Buddhist statues carved into cliffs of volcanic tuff about five kilometers southwest of Usuki's city center in Oita Prefecture. Dating from the late Heian period through the Kamakura period, the carvings are divided into four clusters spread across a peaceful hillside linked by paved walking paths. In 1995, they became the first rock-carved Buddhist images in Japan to receive National Treasure designation, recognizing their exceptional artistry and historical significance. The serene Furuzono cluster features the most celebrated piece, a large seated Buddha whose detached head was famously restored to its body in 1993 after centuries on the ground. The surrounding countryside of lotus ponds and rice fields enhances the contemplative atmosphere of this hidden cultural gem.
