About This Destination
A UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving Japan's first modern silk reeling factory, a cornerstone of Meiji-era industrialization.
Tomioka Silk Mill, established in 1872 by the Meiji government with French technical guidance, was Japan's first large-scale modern silk reeling factory. The mill played a pivotal role in Japan's industrialization by introducing Western machine-based silk production techniques that transformed the country into the world's leading raw silk exporter. The remarkably well-preserved brick-and-timber buildings, designed by French engineer Auguste Bastien, feature a distinctive combination of Western industrial architecture and traditional Japanese construction methods. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, the complex includes the massive East Cocoon Warehouse, the Silk Reeling Plant, and workers' quarters. Guided tours and exhibits bring to life the story of the young women who worked the machinery and Japan's rapid modernization.
