Takamagahara Onsen
About This Destination
Takamagahara Onsen sits at about 2,100 m in the headwaters of the Kurobe River, and no road comes near it. The course times published by the Taro-daira hut group, which runs the hut here, add up to about 13 hours from the Oritate trailhead: 4 h 30 min up to Taro-daira, 2 h 40 min down to Yakushizawa, then about 6 hours more to Takamagahara Sanso, either along the Daito Shindo trail beside the Kurobe River or over the Kumonodaira plateau. Most people sleep at Taro-daira or Yakushizawa on the way in, and the walk out takes just as long. The Daito Shindo becomes impassable when the river is high, the climb to Kumonodaira is on slippery, mossy rock, and the trail to Yakushizawa has stream crossings. This is for hikers who have already done multi-day trips in the Alps, not a first mountain walk. The baths are 15 to 20 minutes downhill from the hut, where the Onsen-zawa stream comes down. There are three pools: one screened pool for women, and mixed pools, one of them with no changing shelter at all. The water is a simple sulfur spring, about 51°C at the source. A plain bridge links the two banks, and you cannot cross it when rain swells the stream. This is also bear country: in August 2025 a bear carried off a tent and food at the Taro-daira campsite, which then closed for the season.

Can I reach Takamagahara Onsen as a day trip or on an easy hike?
No. From the Oritate trailhead it is about 13 hours of walking each way by the hut operator's course times, with stream crossings, slippery rock and a riverside trail that closes in high water. Plan at least two days in and two days out, with a night at Taro-daira or Yakushizawa each way, and come with multi-day mountain experience.
Is there a women-only bath, and is the rest mixed bathing?
Yes. Of the three open-air pools, one is screened off for women. The others are mixed, and one has no changing shelter. Bring your own towel. No published rule on swimsuits or bath wraps turned up, so ask at the hut. Hut guests bathe free, and if you are staying elsewhere, ask at the hut whether a contribution is expected.
When is Takamagahara Sanso open, and do I need to book?
In 2026 the hut opened from 5 July to 30 September, and the dates can change with weather and lingering snow. All huts run by the Taro-daira group take reservations only, online or on 076-482-1418, and they do not keep a waiting list. Bookings for the 2026 season opened on 7 May.
