About This Destination

In central Shizuoka, moats and reconstructed gates outline the castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his later years. Sunpu is a park of surviving earthworks and recovered history, with garden and turret visits adding detail to the open grounds.

Sunpu Castle Park occupies the heart of Shizuoka, on ground closely associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. After establishing the shogunate, Ieyasu returned to Sunpu, and the castle became a center of political authority during his later years. Walking around its moats makes the scale of this former seat of power easier to grasp within the modern city.

There is no surviving main keep. Reconstructed gates and turrets instead help visitors read the castle’s layout, while the open park leaves space to follow the defenses at an unhurried pace. The contrast between water, stone walls and modern buildings is part of the experience: the castle has disappeared in places but still shapes the city around it.

Combine the outdoor walk with a visit to the Momijiyama Garden or the turret exhibitions, checking their separate admission and opening arrangements. From Shizuoka Station, the approach passes through the city center, so the park works well as part of a wider walking route. Set aside time to circle a section of the moat rather than heading straight to one reconstructed building.
