Hamamatsu Castle
About This Destination
Hamamatsu Castle is associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu’s rise from regional warlord to national ruler. He made Hamamatsu his base long before the decisive Battle of Sekigahara and the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. Later lords also advanced to senior positions, contributing to the castle’s reputation as a place of career advancement.
The present keep was built in 1958, so it should be understood as a reconstruction rather than Ieyasu’s surviving residence. Its exhibitions introduce the castle and the city’s history, while the older stone foundations provide a direct connection with the site’s defensive past. Comparing the irregular masonry with the crisp outlines of the tower makes the different historical layers visible.
The surrounding park gives the visit a gentler pace than a tower-only stop. Combine the climb with a walk through the grounds, then return to the city center for food or onward travel. Buses from Hamamatsu Station shorten the approach, although the last section to the castle is on foot. Check current museum access before setting out.
