About This Destination

A UNESCO World Heritage peninsula at the northeast tip of Hokkaido with two gateway towns: Utoro on the Sea of Okhotsk and Rausu on the Nemuro Strait. No road reaches the cape; you see it from a sightseeing boat out of Utoro or walk there over several days. The pass between the two towns is closed from early November to late April.

Shiretoko is the long peninsula at the northeast corner of Hokkaido, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005. You base yourself in one of two towns. Utoro, on the Sea of Okhotsk side in Shari, has most of the hotels, the sightseeing boats and the road to the Shiretoko Five Lakes. Rausu, on the Nemuro Strait side, looks across at Kunashiri Island and is the place for whale- and bird-watching boats. Route 334 crosses the Shiretoko Pass between them, but only from late April to early November. In winter the two towns are a long detour apart.

The tip, Cape Shiretoko, has no road at all. Most people see it from a boat: Aurora's Cape Shiretoko route leaves Utoro once a day and takes about four hours. The other way in is a coastal trek from the Rausu side that the Ministry of the Environment describes as three or four days of hard going, over rock shelves you can only pass at low tide, with no trail and bears on the shore. It expects you to walk out the way you walked in; chartering a boat for one leg breaks the rules.

At the Shiretoko Five Lakes, 14 km past Utoro, the elevated boardwalk to the first lake is free and fenced against bears. The ground trail round all five lakes is the part with rules. From May 10 to July 31 you may only walk it on a tour with a registered guide; the rest of the open season you sit a short lecture and pay 450 yen first. Bear sightings close it at short notice.

Can I get to the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula?

Not by road. The usual way is Aurora's Cape Shiretoko boat from Utoro: as the operator's fare page showed it in October 2026, it sails once a day at 10:15 in Golden Week and from June 1 to October 15 (planned), takes about four hours and costs 10,000 yen for adults. You stay on board; it does not land. Walking there is a multi-day coastal trek from the Rausu side for experienced people only. The Ministry of the Environment asks trekkers to stop at the Rusa Field House or the Rausu Visitor Center for current conditions first, and to walk back rather than take a boat one way.

Do I need a guide to walk the Shiretoko Five Lakes?

Not for the elevated boardwalk, which is free all season and takes about 40 minutes there and back. The ground trail round the lakes is a controlled area under the Natural Parks Act. From May 10 to July 31 (bear activity season) you can only walk it with a registered guide: the 3 km big loop takes about three hours and costs from 6,000 yen booked ahead. The rest of the open season you can walk it alone after an on-site lecture, for 450 yen. In 2026 the Five Lakes opened on April 20, and in October 2026 the field house's hours page listed opening hours up to November 8. The ground trail closes whenever bears are about.

Should I stay in Utoro or Rausu?

Utoro if you want the Five Lakes, the boat to the cape or the airport bus from Memanbetsu; it has more hotels. Rausu if you came for whale- and bird-watching boats or plan to trek to the cape. In summer you can cross the Shiretoko Pass between them, and Shari Bus ran four buses a day over it from July 1 to August 31, 2026. From November to late April the pass is closed, so pick one side.

When can I see drift ice at Shiretoko, and how do I get there in winter?

Drift ice usually lies against the Utoro coast from early February to mid-March, and guided drift-ice walks ran from February 1 to March 31 in 2026, depending on the ice. In winter the Shiretoko Airport Liner from Memanbetsu ran only from January 17 to March 8, 2026. Outside that window take the train to Shiretoko-Shari and Shari Bus on to Utoro, which runs all winter but goes no further than the Shiretoko Nature Center. The Shiretoko Pass and the summer road to the Five Lakes are closed.
