About This Destination

UNESCO World Heritage village with traditional gassho-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouses in a remote mountain valley.
Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in a remote mountain valley of Gifu Prefecture, famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. The village of Ogimachi is the largest and most popular, with many farmhouses still inhabited and some open as museums or minshuku (guesthouses). The Shiroyama Viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the entire village and is especially stunning during the winter illumination events held on select evenings in January and February, when the snow-covered village is lit up. Some farmhouses are over 250 years old and the architectural style is unique to this region. Shirakawa-go can be reached by highway bus from Takayama (about 50 minutes) or Kanazawa (about 75 minutes). Staying overnight in a gassho-zukuri farmhouse is a memorable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Shirakawa-go from Tokyo, Kyoto, or Kanazawa?

There's no train to Shirakawa-go — you must take a highway bus. From Kanazawa: Hokutetsu/Nohi bus 75 min (~¥2,200, ~6 daily) — reservation recommended. From Takayama: Nohi bus 50 min (~¥2,600, ~10 daily, no reservation needed). From Tokyo: take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama (2h10m) or Kanazawa (2h30m) then bus. From Kyoto/Osaka: Thunderbird ltd. express to Kanazawa (2h15m / 2h45m respectively, ¥7,000–8,000 reserved) then bus. The popular Kanazawa→Shirakawa-go→Takayama bus chain works as a one-day stopover.

When is the winter illumination and how do I get a ticket?

The Ogimachi winter illumination runs ~6 dates in mid-January to mid-February (specific dates vary each year — check shirakawa-go.gr.jp). Since 2019 the event is **strictly reservation-only**: you must hold either (a) an overnight stay in the village booked through approved channels, (b) a paid parking ticket bought weeks in advance (~¥1,000), or (c) a designated bus tour from Kanazawa/Takayama (¥5,000–8,000). Walk-ins are turned away. Reservations open in October and sell out within hours. The Shiroyama Viewpoint platform is itself ticketed during illumination evenings.

Is staying overnight in a gassho-zukuri farmhouse worth it?

Yes if you can plan ahead — the village empties of day-trippers after about 17:00, leaving overnight guests to experience the genuinely quiet, atmospheric Shirakawa most visitors never see. ~20 farmhouses run as minshuku, each with 3–8 rooms, family-style irori-grilled dinner + breakfast, futon on tatami, shared bath. ¥10,000–15,000 per person per night including meals is typical. Book 3–6 months ahead via the village minshuku reservation centre (online JP/EN). Note: most minshuku don't accept credit cards (cash only), have early dinner times (~18:00), and a strict no-smoking, lights-out-by-22:00 culture.
