About This Destination
Beautifully preserved Edo-period canal district in Katori City, known as 'Little Edo on the Water' with traditional merchant houses and willow-lined waterways.
Sawara is a charming historic district in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture, where traditional Edo-period merchant houses line the banks of the Ono River. Designated as the first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the Kanto region, Sawara earned the nickname 'Little Edo on the Water' for its well-preserved townscape of white-walled storehouses and wooden merchant buildings reflected in the canal. Visitors can take leisurely boat rides along the willow-lined waterway, passing under arched bridges while admiring the historical architecture. The area is also famous for its connection to Ino Tadataka, the cartographer who created the first accurate map of Japan, and his former residence is now a museum. The Sawara Grand Festival, held in July and October, features elaborate floats parading through the narrow streets.
