About This Destination

Four inns at the head of the Kinu River inside Nikko National Park: Kaniyu, Hatchonoyu, Nikkozawa Onsen and Teshirozawa Onsen. No private cars or taxis go past Meotobuchi, so you walk in on a forest trail (80 to 90 minutes to the nearest inns, 2 to 2.5 hours to Teshirozawa) or, if you are staying at Kaniyu or Hatchonoyu, ride the inn's shuttle.

Okukinu is four separate inns scattered along the upper Kinu River, with no town around them, and all of them sit beyond a gate. At Meotobuchi the road becomes the Okukinu Super Rindo, a forest road closed to private cars, and Teshirozawa's own access page adds that ordinary taxis cannot go past Meotobuchi either. You leave the car at the free Meotobuchi parking lot or step off the city bus and walk. Kaniyu puts its inn 4.5 km and about 1 hour 20 minutes up the trail; Hatchonoyu says about 90 minutes; Nikkozawa, at about 1,400 m, says 1.5 to 2 hours; Teshirozawa, the farthest, says 2 to 2.5 hours and asks you to be at Meotobuchi by 13:00 so you are not hiking at dusk. Kaniyu and Hatchonoyu run shuttles on the forest road for their overnight guests (about 25 minutes to Kaniyu). Nikkozawa and Teshirozawa have no shuttle at all, and Teshirozawa's guests cannot ride the other two inns' vans. Nikkozawa is the old-fashioned one: phone bookings only, cash only, and two mixed outdoor baths. Kaniyu draws on five different springs. In snow, add 30 minutes to an hour to the walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive or take a taxi to the Okukinu inns?

No. The forest road beyond Meotobuchi is closed to private cars, and ordinary taxis cannot go past Meotobuchi either. Park at the free Meotobuchi lot and walk, or ride the shuttle if you are staying at Kaniyu or Hatchonoyu. Nikkozawa and Teshirozawa have no shuttle.

Can I visit just for a bath, without staying the night?

At Nikkozawa, yes: day bathing runs 9:00 to 15:00 (last entry 14:30) for 700 yen, but phone first, as weekdays include cleaning days. Kaniyu offers a limited day plan with the shuttle that must be booked by phone or online. Hatchonoyu suspended day bathing in February 2025. Remember the last bus back leaves Meotobuchi at 15:25.

How long is the walk from Meotobuchi?

By the inns' own figures: about 1 hour 20 minutes (4.5 km) to Kaniyu, about 90 minutes to Hatchonoyu, 1.5 to 2 hours to Nikkozawa and 2 to 2.5 hours to Teshirozawa. In snow it takes 30 minutes to an hour longer, and Hatchonoyu says winter hikers need mountain gear.
