About This Destination

A Shinkansen-connected city famous for the Momotaro legend, Korakuen Garden, and access to the art islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
Okayama is a welcoming mid-sized city on the San'yo Shinkansen line, forever linked with the beloved folk tale of Momotaro, the peach boy who emerged from a giant fruit to defeat a band of ogres. The legend permeates the city, from statues at the station to local mascots. The city's crown jewel is Korakuen, ranked among Japan's three finest landscape gardens. Visitors can stroll through meticulously maintained lawns, plum groves, and working tea fields, all set against the dramatic black silhouette of Okayama Castle rising across the Asahi River. The castle itself houses a museum and observation deck with panoramic city views. Okayama has also become one of the best bases for reaching the art islands of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima in the Seto Inland Sea, known worldwide for their contemporary art museums and installations. Blessed with a mild, sunny climate that has earned it the nickname "Land of Sunshine," the city offers excellent transport connections and makes a pleasant destination year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Okayama from Tokyo, Osaka, or Hiroshima?

Okayama is on the JR San'yō Shinkansen, which makes it remarkably accessible. From Tokyo: Nozomi or Hikari Shinkansen, 3.5 hours (¥17,610). From Shin-Osaka: Nozomi 45 minutes (¥6,170). From Hiroshima: Nozomi 35 minutes (¥6,170). Okayama Airport (OKJ) handles a few international and domestic flights; airport limousine bus to JR Okayama Station takes 30 minutes (¥780).

What's the connection to the Momotaro legend?

The Momotaro story — peach boy who fights ogres with a dog, monkey, and pheasant — is rooted in the legend of Prince Kibitsuhiko, who supposedly defeated the ogre Ura at nearby Kibitsu Shrine. Today, you'll see Momotaro statues at Okayama Station's east exit, kibi-dango (millet sweets) sold throughout the city, and even local mascots based on the tale. The Kibitsu Shrine itself is a 25-minute train ride west and is well worth pairing with a city visit.

Is Okayama a good base for the Setouchi art islands?

Excellent base. From Okayama Station, take JR Seto-Ohashi Line to Uno (50 min, ¥590), then Shikoku Ferry to Naoshima (20 min, ¥300). Teshima ferries also leave from Uno. Inujima ferries leave from Hoden, accessible from Okayama Station by Ryobi bus (45 min). Many travellers stay 2–3 nights in Okayama and use it as a launchpad. Cycling is also popular: rent at Uno and ride the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido by ferry-hopping.

What food should I try in Okayama?

Demi-glace katsudon — a pork cutlet over rice with brown sauce, invented at Aji-tsukasa Nomura in 1931 — is the local dish to try, and the original shop still serves it. Okayama-style barazushi (jewel-like scattered sushi) is another regional staple. Don't miss white peach (Hakuto) desserts in summer (June–August) — fruit parfaits at Fruits Cafe Mae are popular enough to require waits. Kibi-dango souvenirs come in many flavors at the station's Sun Station Terrace. Local craft beer at Doppo Brewery.
