About This Destination

Expansive lakeside park in central Fukuoka built around the former moat of Fukuoka Castle, popular for jogging, boating, and cherry blossoms.
Ohori Park is a spacious public park in central Fukuoka built around a large pond that was originally part of the moat system of Fukuoka Castle. The two-kilometer path circling the pond is a favorite among joggers and walkers, while pedal boats and swan boats are available for rent on the water. Three small islands in the pond are connected by elegant bridges, creating a picturesque walking route. The park is a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, with around 1,000 trees lining the paths. The Fukuoka Art Museum sits on the park's eastern edge and the adjacent Maizuru Park contains the castle ruins. The area around the park has numerous cafes and the adjacent Nishi Park offers additional green space.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Ohori Park?

Take the Fukuoka City Subway Kuko (Airport) Line to Ohorikoen Station — the park entrance is right at exit 3 (about 6 minutes from Hakata Station, 260 yen). From Tenjin Station it's a single stop (210 yen). Walking from Tenjin's Daimyo area takes about 15 minutes. The park is open 24 hours and the station has elevators.

What can I do at Ohori Park?

Walk or jog the 2 km loop around the central pond, rent a swan boat or rowboat (around 1,100 yen for 30 minutes), cross the three bridges that link the islands, and visit the Fukuoka Art Museum on the east side (250 yen). The Japanese garden in the southwest corner is paid (250 yen). Adjacent Maizuru Park has the ruins of Fukuoka Castle and is free. Bring a picnic — there are plenty of lawns and benches.

When is the best time to visit Ohori Park?

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms — about 1,000 trees line the paths and the Maizuru Park castle ruins right next door add to the bloom display. Late July's Ohori Park Fireworks Festival (around July 20) is one of Kyushu's biggest fireworks displays. Mornings are quietest year-round; sunset over the pond is photogenic. Mild spring and autumn are best for boating; summer is hot but lit beautifully on weekend evenings.

Are there food options near Ohori Park?

Yes — the Royal Garden Cafe on the south shore is famous for its terrace overlooking the pond, and Starbucks Reserve has a beautifully designed branch on the north side with floor-to-ceiling pond views. The Fukuoka Art Museum cafe is a quieter option. Five minutes' walk away in the Akasaka area you'll find lots of restaurants — particularly tonkotsu ramen, mizutaki hot pot, and Hakata-style yakitori. Convenience stores ring the park for picnic supplies.
